Exogenous adrenal insufficiency

Symptoms:

Symptoms include:

  • weakness
  • lethargy
  • tiredness
  • nausea and vomiting
  • arthralgias, myalgias (muscle pains)
  • low blood pressure (hypotension) which may cause light-headedness or even fainting when the affected person stands after sitting or lying down.
Signs and tests:

Typically, a patient who has been taking steroids and has developed this condition will exhibit Cushingoid features (round face, centripetal obesity, striae) while having symptoms of adrenal insufficiency.

Signs may include

  • hypotension or orthostasis
  • shock

Tests will look for:

  • low cortisol level
  • low sodium
  • hypoglycemia
  • depressed response to ACTH
